The Ultimates is one of my favorite comics every month. Since issue one it has gone balls to the wall to completely tear down Marvel’s Ultimate universe. Reed Richards returns to Earth as the ultimate bad guy who forces America into surrendering to him by completely wiping out Washington. Then after his defeat, America has broken down into regions controlled by different groups with Texas leading the way in craziness (nothing unusual there).
Now in the wake of the “Divided We Fall” storyline come “United We Stand” which will see Steve Rogers assume the duties of the President of the United States of America.
That’s right. Cap is the Prez.
Like I said I love this comic and maybe this is the ten year old in me speaking but Captain America as the PUSA is completely f***ing awesome! I mean look deep down into your nerd heart, before life made you so cynical you can’t enjoy anything anymore. You know this to be true. You want Cap as president. You need Cap as president.
The first three issues of Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers will connect to make one giant splash scene which is great since the team is large enough to almost be it’s own football team. Seriously, it’s like a Where’s Waldo? of superhero teams. I bet if you actually look hard enough you will find Carmen Sandiego or Jimmy Hoffa hiding around in there somewhere.
Another deleted scene has been released by Marvel just ahead of The Avengers September 25 home release and I can honestly say that this one should have made it into the movie. Now I understand why Joss Whedon didn’t want it in there. There were time constraints and this is something that could be told in the Cap sequel but this sequence is just so great it should be seen by everyone. We all knew he would have a hard time adjusting to his 70 year absence and seeing him go through the files of all his deceased comrades and seeing that Peggy is still alive brings the difficulty of his transition into the forefront.
Also it introduces us to when Cap met Ashley Johnson’s waitress character which would have helped when you saw her like four times during and after the end battle and wondered why they kept showing this random waitress chick.
Here is a new deleted scene from the upcoming release of The Avengers on Blu-Ray and DVD. It changes not only the opening but the entire feel of the film altogether. Now I may be in the minority but I really like this scene. Don’t get me wrong, I love the movie and like the opening we got in theaters but this seems to add much more weight to the final battle especially seeing this as the film opens you really get a grasp of how large the fight will be. I think it give Cobie Smulders a great scene and shows that Maria Hill is not just Nick Fury’s “yes” woman.
What do you think? Does this scene add or take away from the movie? Would it have taken away some of the lighthearted feeling during some of the movie?
Today Marvel announced that The Avengers 2 will release in theaters on May 1, 2015. So we just have to be patient for about 2 1/2 more years. This was the next logical move for Marvel who locked up Joss Whedon to write and direct the sequel last week.
For me I have to think that after Avengers 2 opens up Marvel is going to have some serious thinking to do because Robert Downey Jr. has been saying that even he doesn’t know where to go after Iron Man 3 so it seems to me that they could convince him to do Avengers 2 but after that it’s anybody’s guess.
The Avengers 2 will close out Marvel’s “Phase 2” and the releases have now all been announced:
Iron Man 3- May 3, 2013
Thor: The Dark World- November 8, 2013
Captain America: The Winter Soldier- April 4, 2014
Guardian of the Galaxy- August 1, 2014
The Avengers 2- May 1, 2015
Anthony Mackie, from the amazing Hurt Locker and more recently Abe Lincoln: Twilight Hunter, will be suiting up as part of Marvel’s Phase 2. He has been cast to play The Falcon in the upcoming Cap sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
This is no doubt huge news for Mackie who was one of the best parts of The Hurt Locker and now it appears he will be upping his star power now that he is offically part of the Marvel movie universe. I would have to assume that this appearance will most likely segue into The Avengers 2 since Falcon became an Avenger in one universe and an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the Ultimate universe.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens up April 4, 2014. If you don’t believe me here’s the title from Comic Con below.
When Marvel announced their reshuffling (ITS NOT A REBOOT, WE PROMISE. WE’RE NOT DC!! DON’T LEAVE!!) of their titles last week and dubbed it “Marvel NOW”, you had to think that not all of Marvel’s titles would be continuing through the events (word used loosely) of AVX. Well you win a cookie because you were entirely correct.
Nine titles are going to the chopping block including Fantastic Four’s main title, effectively ending it’s 50 year run. Some titles were probably nearing the end of their runs anyway so this may just be a cost cutting measure for Marvel to make room for the new titles.
Marvel’s October death list includes:
Fantastic Four #611
Captain America #19
New Mutants #50
X-Men Legacy #275
Incredible Hulk #15
Uncanny X-Men #20
Invincible Iron-Man #527
We all know that using big events such as AVX to reboot comics is commonplace in the world or worlds that we read about every month. I just wish the series being used for this had not been such a disappointment. Right now I am reading AVX because I am seven issues in dammit and my nerd stubborness is going to make me finish and hope for the best…or less mediocre.
Mass Effect? Max Payne 3? Skyrim? The Witcher 2?
F all those games!!
Marvel keeps the hits coming with The Avengers video game. Go on and watch, you know you want it.
Or maybe this game should be called Captain America: Hydra Asylum because you can not play this game without seeing the basic design and controls for Batman: Arkham Asylum ripped off thoroughly. And I am not meaning that in a derogatory way because if you are going to base your design and control scheme off another game why not take it from one of the finest action titles ever released?
The game takes place while the movie is happening and yet has a story that is not directly involved with the movie. If you have seen the movie you can pretty much tell that this happens during the montage of battles that take place after Steve Rogers stops being a USO show and takes up being a real war hero. Cap dives into a Hydra facility that ends up being on the grounds of Baron Zemo’s castle. You must make a way for the Howling Commandos and soldiers to enter the grounds and discover what exactly Hydra is doing behind the castle walls.
The castle is not as expertly designed as Arkham Asylum but it has more than its share of twists and turns and interconnecting tunnels to keep you looking for a bit. It just does not spring to life like Arkham or Rapture from Bioshock but few games accomplish that. Sega has filled the game with collectibles to ensure that you do search every nook and cranny of the Hydra base and I did find myself trying to find all the ceramic eggs, Zemo diaries, film reels and break every statue I could. Maybe it was because I was surprised how decent a movie based game I was playing. Who knows?
Control wise if you have played Batman: AA then you pretty much know how to play this game. That was the most impressive part of the game was how solid the combat was. Strikes are performed with one button and must be used in conjunction with counters and shield attacks. I hate to keep coming back to Batman but just insert in a star spangled shield instead of batarangs and there you go. You also have special attacks that build up and when unleashed are devastating slow motion hits that really add a satisfying finish to fights.
The pros in Cap far outweigh the cons which include a wonky camera, jumping sections that are too easy and the game holding your hand through some sections instead of figuring things out for yourself. The graphics are not great but they get the job done and honestly I was having fun enjoying the combat to notice any glaring graphical hiccups.
Is Cap a great game? No it isn’t but it is a decent game that is made good by the fun combat. And in the world of movie based games you can do worse. Much, much worse (i.e. see Iron Man)
