Nintendo Power Is Closing Up Shop

File this under more childhood memories that are dead. News today has surfaced that Nintendo Power is going the way of the Virtual Boy. Future Publishing said they were going to halt the monthly magazine and that Nintendo showed no interest in picking up the licence again to try and save it. Now granted I didn’t read Nintendo Power on a regular basis anymore but this is sad news still because it was such a huge part of my childhood.

Who didn’t love reading about the awesome new Zelda game that was promised to be out by the end of the year and wasn’t seen for three years more (i.e. every Zelda game) or keeping up with the continuing adventures of Captain N? Memories….light the corners of my mind. Misty, water colored memories. of the way we were.

So let’s all shed a single Indian tear and pour a 40 for our dear departed childhood friend Nintendo Power.

Nintendo Unveils New, Bigger 3DS. I Want A Rebate

Tonight Nintendo took the wraps off of what has been rumored for about a month now, a bigger 3DS. Now I know this is what Nintendo does but I just bought my damn 3DS 3 months ago. Come on guys. Let’s get a rebate program going for the folks who recently bought an “old” 3DS and you just butt raped.

Ok, anger aside this thing is a beast. The top screen is 4.88 inches. That’s 90% bigger than the previous model. The bottom touchscreen also is getting a 90% bump to 4.18 inches. I am sure this will convey the 3D in a way better manner than the smaller screen does now. Also the 3DS headache will now become the 3DS migraine.

The official name is the Nintendo 3DS XL and will release on August 19 and retail for 199.99 and despite all my bit**ing I will probably still buy one.

Life of a nerd.

Zombi U Video Gives Me Reason To Watch Aisha Tyler

Lana…..Lana….LANNAAAAAA

Sorry I had to.

Well here it is. The one sole game that actually looked appealing to me for the Wii U. I’m posting up the opening cinematic from Ubisoft’s event because I believe Aisha Tyler should be seen as much as humanly possible.

E3 Press Conference Thoughts

Image

That picture above is how I feel after all the press conferences were said and done at this week’s E3. Don’t get me wrong there were tons of great games to look at and I will be telling you my favorites at the end of the week but as far as the actual press conferences go, they were disappointing.

If there was a winner I would have to say it would be Sony. They showed off Quantic Dream’s new game Beyond: Two Souls starring Ellen Page, some God of War: Ascension gameplay, announced that Assassin’s Creed 3 would have Playstation exclusive content and closed the show with with some new gameplay from The Last of Us that wowed not just the audience and me but the guys I was watching it with who don’t even own Playstation 3.

On the low end of Sony’s time was the massive lack of Vita support. Sure they announced the Assassin’s Creed game we all knew was coming and showed a minute teaser but there was only mention of Call of Duty and absolutely no mention of Bioshock or any other triple A title in the works. Worse yet was that there was no price drop. It shows me Sony may be a bit blind as to what is going on. They are bleeding money. Their stocks are the lowest they have been since 1984, the 3DS is kicking Vita’s ass in sales and while the Vita’s game library is large number wise most games could be considered forgettable.

3DS sales surged after their price drop and are still going strong. Why not at least go to $199 and give Vita a fighting chance? You have to have people playing these things to sell games. Who wants to develop for a system that is considered a worldwide disappointment? Help yourselves Sony. We want to give you money. Let us.

Microsoft brought some Halo 4 to show and had a quick teaser for Gears of War: Judgment but beyond that it was mostly third party games. Which is great and all but this is Microsoft’s time how about use it to show off some first party development? Something tells me that the reason they didn’t have any new IP’s to show or focus on is because we are late in the 360 life cycle and they may be focusing their first party game attention to the next generation XBox.

That is not to say the 360 is dying, far from it. Microsoft unveiled Smartglass which basically turns your tablet or smartphone into a pseudo 360 controller which sounds cool in design but I doubt I will be using it very much. You now have your phone, tablet, Kinect and controller to control your XBox. What I would like are some great looking new IP’s to be excited about playing.

The Kinect was almost an afterthought on Monday. After the sensor has been a focal point for the past two (or three?) shows the big announcement we got this year was that they were adding languages to the Kinect voice integration. No real games to speak of so if you want to you can now look up the awesome The Last of Us video from Sony’s show on YouTube in Portuguese with your Kinect.

Now we come to Nintendo who had me wrapped around their finger before the show started, full of hope about the Wii U. I was ready to be blown away with how the controller will truly add a new depth to gameplay like the Nintendo 64 and Wii have. Cut to over an hour later and Nintendo had taken my soul and crushed it. In my E3 wish list I said that Ninrendo needed to prove that the Wii U was not going to be a Wii 1.5 with a tablet and that is exactly what Nintendo spent over an hour showing me.

Miyamoto brought out Pikmin 3 which looked fun and after that it didn’t just go downhill, it started like an avalanche that rolled straight down to the pits of boring gaming hell. Not even New Super Mario Bros. U could bring this back to life because they showed off New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the 3DS a few minutes later which looked like THE SAME GAME. No big new open world Mario game, no Zelda, no Metroid, no Kirby, not even fu**ing Donkey Kong.

Things got no better when they rolled out the third party games….or should I say game. WB Games showed off Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition which showed the Wii U is perfectly capable of handling a nine month old game with a tablet controller. And that was about it. A sizzle reel was shown after showing games like Darksiders 2, Aliens and Mass Effect 3 coming but nothing else. I don’t want a system that is on par with what I have now. Make a leap. The only game that was shown that looked like it took full capabilites of Wii U’s controller was Ubisoft’s Zombi U. The look and concept of the game had a little bit of a fresh feel to it and was the only thing in the entire press conference that I felt I would truly want to play on the system. After that I spaced out and it all became about Luigi’s Mansion minigames and Nintendolands and I had given up at that point.

I love Nintendo. I truly do. I wanted them to knock this out of the park and what I got was an hour long Casey at the Bat.

Nintendo’s Pre-E3 Video Wasn’t Enough. Let’s Have More!!

Nintendo's Pre-E3 Video Wasn't Enough. Let's Have More!!

Nintendo has announced they will be holding a live stream on Wednesday night strictly showing off a lot of 3DS software. That makes me initially think the almost all of their press conference tomorrow will focus solely on the Wii U and I can’t really blame them for that.

So the press conference tallies are as follows
Nintendo- 3
Microsoft- 1
Sony- 1

In Japan the most of anything wins. Nintendo wins E3!!

(If they announce a bigger 3DS like is reported three months after I finally decided to take the plunge the the Big N can eat a bag of dicks.)

My E3 2012 Wishlist

With only a few days to go before the biggest video game show of the year all of us gamers have expectations going into next Monday. Can Nintendo take the show and make it all about the Wii U? Will Sony or Microsoft have anything extra up their sleeve besides the continued support of their existing platforms? Here is what I am looking forward to when the doors open up this next week.

The Wii U Must Steal The Show

This is Nintendo’s show to lose. With a less than stellar debut last year, the Wii U left people scratching their head at more than the name. With developers’ opinions about the hardware all over the place running from “not near as powerful as the PS3” to people like Gearbox who say that they are making the Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines the definitive version of the game, Nintendo has got to show fans that games will work on this system and that it is not just a Wii 1.5 with a tablet. I think they need to have more than one blockbuster first party title to sell people on the system. We all know that we are getting a new Mario game but to really get me excited and convinced I want to plop down 300 bucks (supposedly) I need more than that. I know we have the previously mentioned Aliens as well as Assassin’s Creed 3 coming but the Big N has got to pull out the big guns. Mario AND a Metroid, Mario AND a Zelda. And none of this launch window crap. You tell me that I can have a new Mario and Metroid on launch day? You’ve sold me. I’ve been burned by the dreaded Nintendo launch window too many times. Wow me Nintendo. Don’t Gamecube me.

Justify My 3DS Purchase

I know it seems like I’m harping on Nintendo. It’s cause I am. I love my 3DS. I really do. I have enjoyed it as much as possible since I bought it 3  months ago. Love Face Raiders and the AR games. Mario Kart and Pilotwings have me cursing at it like they should. I need more. I need Nintendo to keep up the EShop more. Give me more classics on a regular basis. The news that a new Castlevania game was releasing this year was the first time I was looking forward to buying a new game for my 3DS. That’s not a good thing. I should be looking forward to multiple game this year but right now I’m at one. I’m afraid Nintendo will focus so much on the Wii U that the 3DS may be like the bastard child at the dinner table.

Playstation Vita Price Drop/ A Quality Lineup

I almost bought a Vita a few months ago. I was in store, money in hand and just couldn’t do it. I bought my 3DS with three games and more and still saved money from getting a Vita. Somehow I just couldn’t bring myself to spend that much on a portable. The Wi-Fi model is 249.99. That’s the same price as a PS3. Perspective people. With total worldwide sales sitting close to 2 million the Vita is a main reason Sony is bleeding cash. For the platform to be popular people actually have to have the system in their hands and not on store shelves. I’m thinking Sony will drop the price and the safe bet is to $199. I hope they take a cue from the 3DS’ surge in sales and drop the system to $169. To go with that Sony needs to have a lot of quality games ready to play, not just show. They had plenty of games at launch but out of 20+ games there were truly three I wanted to play. Gravity Rush comes out soon and we know that there are Sly Cooper, Call of Duty and Bioshock in development and it would be great to see them up and running next week. I want to give you my money Sony. Show me you want it!

The Last of Us

Naughty Dog’s next game is not Uncharted. And you know what? That’s awesome. I love Uncharted but after seeing the opening cinematic and the first bit of gameplay I am completely ready for this game. Unlike Uncharted where you feel almost invincible as Nathan Drake when you jump from building to building and dropkick and shoot bad guys this game is full of dread. A feeling of helplessness in this world gone to hell. The opening of the game really shows you the dire situations you will be encountering by not just trying to survive but protect someone that can’t do it themselves. Naughty Dog is on such a roll right now that this is the game I am looking forward to most this fall.

New Gears of War

Just announced yesterday and I have already peed my pants and squealed like a little girl multiple times. The released Game Informer cover has been purposely blacked out until the games reveal on Monday. But to me it looks like Marcus in handcuffs as our old Locust friends raise hell behind him. Sequel? Prequel? I’m thinking Epic will go the prequel route since it has such a rich backstory with all the novels that have been released over the past few years. I mean really what else do you need? It’s more Gears!!!!!!!

More games I am looking forward to next week:

Tomb Raider

Halo 4

Dishonored

God of War: Ascension

Aliens: Colonial Marines

Bioshock: Infinite

Assassin’s Creed 3

Mario Bros. (Wii U)

New Super Mario Bros. (3DS)

E3 2011 Wrap Up

And just like that it was over….

E3 2011 was just as much fun as I thought it would be. Systems revealed and named, one of the strongest game lineups ever and booth babes galore! Now comes the hard part…..the waiting. Especially for the amazing games that we already know are coming out in 2012 like Mass Effect 3 and Kingdoms of Amalur.
So while we wait I thought I would give you my list of the games and news that stole the show in my humble opinion. Let’s begin shall we?

Best Of Show- Skyrim (PS3, 360)

When Bethesda reported that they stopped clocking the game at 300 hours I almost wet myself. It looks like they have kept everything we loved about Oblivion and improved everything we did not and gone balls to the wall with a game of such an epic size I don’t know how to even wrap my head around 100% completing it.

Best Press Conference- Sony

I would have thought Nintendo would be primed to steal the show but Sony took the reigns and never looked back. They brought the exclusives (Uncharted, Resistance, Sly Cooper, Twisted Metal), sold me on the PSVita with a competitive price to the 3DS and appeared genuinely humbled by the infamous PSN outage. Well played Sony.

Best Surprise- Sly Cooper 4 (PS3)

We all knew it would happen. Eventually Sly would be making his way to the PS3 and here it is!!

Worst Surprise- Nintendo Kicking Me In The Nuts With The Wii U

Maybe I expected too much. Maybe like many video game fans had hoped this would be the hardcore Nintendo system we’ve been waiting on. Dreams of cool names ran through my head. Would it be the Stream or something sweeter like when the Wii was known as Revolution. Then the announcement came, the Wii U. What? What the hell is that? Is Nintendo opening a college I had no idea about? Now don’t get me wrong since the announcement I have become intrigued by the controller and possible (I stress possible) uses for it. The system looks powerful enough but tech demos are not a game. Who knows? I may end up buying a Wii U in the end but the pain of the full frontal crotch kick from the press conference still stings.

Best PS3 Game- Uncharted 3

Can Naughty Dog do no wrong? This game is one of the prettiest games and were still five months from release. Just like Uncharted 2 was leaps and bounds above the first, I expect this to eclipse the second in the same way.

Best 360 Game- Gears of War 3

It all comes down to this. On September 20 we will find out the fate of Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad with Epic’s……well epic trilogy. Not only that but add in the fact that multiplayer will have it’s own dedicated servers and the new and improved Horde Mode looks nothing short of amazing and you can see that Epic is throwing everything they can at us.

Best Wii Game- Zelda: Skyward Sword

What else would it be? Dance Dance Revolution 2? The Wii had a crap year so of course this would be the game. Looks a bit brighter than Twilight Princess and it uses the Wii Motion Plus well from the look of it.

Most Anticipated- Mass Effect 3

One of the best thing to come out of E3 was we finally got a release date for Mass Effect 3. And while March 6, 2012 may be a bit longer than I thought it will be well worth the wait. I have not looked forward to seeing how a video game story comes to a close more than with Mass Effect. I’ve spent four years developing a character and relationships through two games and can not wait to see how all of it plays out in the end.

Best Trailer- Assassin’s Creed: Revelations

Best Demo For Something That Doesn’t Exist Yet- Zelda HD (Wii U)

I know, I know I gave my two cents earlier about the Wii U but I also said that the more I see the more I sort of, kind of like it. It just wasn’t what I was expecting. But this Zelda HD demo was a good early glimpse of what could be in our Nintendo futures.

There was so much to take in this week that I am still trying to process it. So many good games to look forward to that it makes my wallet cringe. Another amazing show. What was your highlight of this years E3? Let me know!

Next……Comic Con 2011!!!

Starfox 64 3D Trailer

Fox McCloud and his roving band of muppets in Arwings are back. I wonder when Nintendo will get around to giving Starfox fans a true new game? Don’t get me wrong I love some Starfox 64 and do want to see what this remake will be like on the 3DS but a new game is a long time coming.

Paper Mario 3DS Trailer

It looks like a Nintendo morning so far. And here is the beginning of a few 3DS games that should make owners happy that they made it through the launch lineup and summer without selling their system back. I loved Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door on Gamecube so I am ready for this new paper adventure.

New Zelda: Skyward Sword Trailer

It’s Link. It’s Zelda. It’s colorful. You waggle your hand. You need a Wii Motion Plus. I want it.
