The Ultimates is one of my favorite comics every month. Since issue one it has gone balls to the wall to completely tear down Marvel’s Ultimate universe. Reed Richards returns to Earth as the ultimate bad guy who forces America into surrendering to him by completely wiping out Washington. Then after his defeat, America has broken down into regions controlled by different groups with Texas leading the way in craziness (nothing unusual there).
Now in the wake of the “Divided We Fall” storyline come “United We Stand” which will see Steve Rogers assume the duties of the President of the United States of America.
That’s right. Cap is the Prez.
Like I said I love this comic and maybe this is the ten year old in me speaking but Captain America as the PUSA is completely f***ing awesome! I mean look deep down into your nerd heart, before life made you so cynical you can’t enjoy anything anymore. You know this to be true. You want Cap as president. You need Cap as president.
I’m falling too far behind on my reading! My apologies guys!! My addiction has grabbed hold of me again and I thought I had shook it. It’s a dangerous thing. It’s called Skyrim. I hope all of you forgive me for the lateness of this due to this wonderful addiction.
A lot of books to go through so we’re just going with scores and favorites at the end.
Books for 8/1
The Dark Knight #11- 8.5
Batman, Inc. #3- 8.0
Winter Soldier #8- 7.5
The Ultimates #13- 9.0
Before Watchmen: Comedian #2- 8.0
All-Star Western #11- 7.5
Green Lantern #11- 8.5
Aquaman #11- 8.0
Books for 8/8
Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe #1- 9.0
Hawkeye #1- 8.5
Detective Comics #12- (Main Story-6.0, Extra Story- 8.0)
Action Comics #12- 7.5
Before Watchmen: Nite Owl #2- 8.5
Swamp Thing #12- 8.5
Animal Man #12- 8.0
If I had to pick a top three of books it would have to be The Ultimates which features Cap finally returning ang kicking all kinds of ass, Deadpool in the beginning of a great series and the new Hawkeye series which is taking a different approach to the hero story and the art looks like Batman: Year One which is always a good thing.
For some reason, I just don’t know why, but Action Comics has not been clicking with me lately. I should love it. It’s Grant Morrison writing Superman but it just seems like he’s writing the character just to do it. I don’t feel any passion for it like with his run on Batman. He is leaving after issue 16 so let’s hope he has a big send off planned and a new writer can keep going up.
Rotworld got off to a great start with Animal Man and Swamp Thing heading down into the heart of the rot. Swamp Thing ended up being a bit better but just because the Animal Man issue was more of a setup. And the end of Swampy is truly a whoah moment.
Till next week….or next time depending on how well I keep up (sorry!)
Batman Annual #1
Scott Snyder gets the opportunity to write Mr. Freeze’s introduction into the new DC universe and completely nails it. Freeze escapes from Arkham (during the Night of the Owls) to hunt down Bruce Wayne who he blames for his accident and disappearance of his popsicle wife, Nora. We get the doctors back story beginning way back with memories of his mother having and accident. Snyder has kept the origin story almost intact except for one nice, big twist that is so good that it adds an all new depth to the character.
Animal Man Annual #1
I have just caught up with Jeff Lemire’s Animal Man and think it is one of the better titles DC is putting out every month. This story picks up right after issue 9 when Buddy had become infected with the Rot. Socks tells Maxine a story of the last time the Rot came and tried to overtake the Earth. A new Animal Man has been exposed and the Swamp Thing of the time join forces to drive the Rot back.
Super Crooks #3
Johnny gets to hear a rather gruesome story about how The Bastard punishes his victims to try and dissuade him from robbing him but alas it doesnt work. The group breaks down the mansion plans and suit up to start the robbery. As Kasey waits at the airport she gets a not so pleasant surprise.
The Ultimates #11
Tony and Thor make a deal to talk to the President about bringing Reed to justice. S.H.I.E.L.D. agents continue tracking down Falcon, Black Widow and Hawkeye to a secret facility where Nick Fury has a little secret hiding. Issue ends with a good cliffhanger and Reed accepting peace terms with the U.S.
Star Trek #9
The Enterprise stops on a planet know as Beta 3 and sends Sulu and another crew member to recon. When they go missing Kirk, Spock and Bones head down to the planet and discover the remains of a Federation ship and a computer that looks Federation built but was kept a close secret.
Star Trek/ Doctor Who: Assimilation 2 #1
The Earth comes under attack by a Borg fleet that do not seem interested in assimilation, only destruction. Federation officers manage to get the Prime Minister off world in a shuttle as we skip to the good doctor, Amy and Rory in the middle of an adventure in ancient Egypt. After saving the Pharaoh they hop into the TARDIS and drop into what they believe is 1940’s San Francisco but realize that Data in a pinstripe suit is a little out of place. Uh oh…holodeck fun. Good crossover start.
Game of Thrones #8
Ned tries to uncover the mystery Jon Arryn unraveled before his death. He learns from Littlefinger than multiple sources within the kingdom are keeping tabs on him. Back on the Wall Jon befriends a new brother, Samwell Tarly and learns how he came to be relegated to the Wall from nobility. Good to see Sam introduced this month finally.
There were a lot of releases also that I could not pick up simply for money reasons. Hack/ Slash Omnibus #4, Batman: Death by Design, Batman: Prey re-release to name a few. Rest assured they will be gotten soon.
So not only does Scott Snyder give us a kick ass Batman, which shows Bruce Wayne’s determination like never before, we also get the beginning of a wonderful pre-NOTO story involving Alfred’s father and a dark mystery at Wayne Manor. This has to be one of the strongest runs for the character in his history.
Batgirl has her hands full with a female talon as explosions rock Gotham and Commissioner Gordon is threatened by the Court with Barbara’s life. Another home run for Team Batman. Love the Haly’s Circus connection also.
Batman and Robin #9
Damian finally using his sadistic side in a helpful way by going one on one with a Talon after a general with a connection to the Court. It’s good when Damian is fighting and not being a complete douche.
Green Lantern #9
Green Lantern comes back in a big way with a great bit of backstory on Sinestro and the creation of the Indigo Lanterns. Some big secrets and you realize that Blackest Night was just a start.
The Ultimates #10
The aftermath of D.C’s disintegration has War Machine finding the new prez, all of the Ultimates becoming fugitives and Sue finding out her lovey dovey is the one trying to obliterate the world. Awkward.
X-O Manowar #1
The early 1400’s when the Roman Empire is expanding its territory. A warrior fights against them to keep his land. Sound like a sci-fi story yet? Don’t worry after that there is alien baby changelings, spaceships and the mysterious armor. I hope they don’t crap X-O up. Good first issue.
Pick of the week is obviously Batman with the Night of the Owls in full swing. The entire Bat staff has really given this huge crossover the quality that Scott Snyder always has in his Bat stories.
If you missed out on Free Comic Book Day don’t fret!! I’m sure all the local shops still have copies to pick up. Be sure and pick up the Justice League and The Guild freebies. They are quite awesome.
Arthur and Ya’Wara go off to inspect Seer’s body while we get flashbacks of Arthur and The Others during his rebellious phase (which includes no shirt). Mera plays the jealous role and is stuck with Shin.
Dark Knight #8
Issue starts out kind of like an episode of Fringe and that’s not a bad thing. Good one shot story involving Mad Hatter and Gordon being forced into therapy. Night of the Owls next month.
All-Star Western #8
Hex gets to fist fight then bathe with a hot chick (how great was the old west?) and get some info on The August 7. Then Arkham gets kidnapped and ruins all the plans. That’s about par for the course.
Ugh. A lot…..I repeat a lot of exposition from a villain that is not very good and a fight at the end that is so Superman it’s almost boring. Best thing about this issue is the cover. Someone save this comic!!!
Super Crooks #2
The team continues to come together and we finally get to hear from Johnny what the big score in Paris is going to be. And FYI, The Indestructible Men may be my favorite new characters in any comic. This book is great!
The Ultimates #9
Wow you keep thinking everything has gone to hell then you find out there is a whole new circle of it. The Children beat People’s ass until Zorn self destructs and finally does some damage to The City. Thor and Tony find out S.H.I.E.L.D. has turned Reed now has Hulk fighting for him. Oh and America gets disintegrated. Nothing too big. Awesome read.
Game of Thrones #7
Tyrion leaves The Wall and stops at Winterfell to leave Bran a gift. Arya and Ned have a heart to heart and we finally get to see Syrio train Arya.
Some good stuff this week with Super Crooks and Ultimates being the better books. It’s still early in Super Crooks so pick up the first two issues and give it a try.
We start out the big event with M.O.D.O.K. getting his ass kicked (again), Scarlet Witch thinking she’s a horrible person, Vision telling her she’s a horrible person and Hope Summers telling Scott to f*** off.
AVX Rd. 1
Scott acts like a complete tool the entire issue and manages to kick start a fight with The Avengers. Good going dick. Oh and the Phoenix is back to take over Hope and make things fun.
The Ultimates #8
Reed may have found a new ally (as if he needed one). Tony and Thor are taken hostage while the president decides to take the offensive on The City. Pretty good stuff.
After last month’s Mera side story we get back to more serious tones with Black Manta back to cause more problems and Aquaman trying to unravel the mystery of who sunk Atlantis. This is still one of my favorite books every month.
All Star Western #7
Jonah heads to NOLA, which still looks as dirty today as in western days, to search for Moody only to get sidetracked by some good old fashioned gladiator type bum fights. Love the story but the art gets on my nerves a bit.
The Dark Knight #7
Batman and Bane go at it one more time to finish up the new venom story and we learn the secret of White Rabbit and no she doesn’t magically become a real rabbit.
New creative team begins with the introduction of Helspont who went to mid 90’s villain school. Dan Jurgens is involved so that may explain a lot. Not a big leap in quality (so far).
Star Trek #7
Good beginning to a new story directly correlating with the movie and a very good twist ending. Looking forward to see where it goes.
Also I am going through American Vampire Vol. 3 so here are the quick scores for the first two.
Vol. 1- 9.5/10
Vol. 2- 9.5/10
Moral of the story kids? Scott Snyder is one of the best things going in comics today.
